Tokyo stocks fell more than three percent in opening trade on Tuesday august 9 2011 after selloffs around the world the previous day in the wake of Standard & Poor's unprecedented downgrade of the United States.
The Nikkei-225 index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which lost 2.18 percent to close at its lowest point in nearly five months on Monday, lost another 3.56 percent, or 324.08 points, to 8,773.48 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
The benchmark index opened down 2.04 percent and quickly widened losses in early trade.
