When you compare the United States to other countries around the world, in my opinion, we still live in the greatest country of all.
We still set the standard and we are still the number one super power in the world. Do we have problems? Yes. Do we have challenges? Yes. What do we need to do? What about the stock market?
The stock market has always gone up and down with an overall average of approximately three years of gains to one year of losses, but not in a predictable chronological order. Take, for example, 1990 to 1999 (bull market for 9 years) and 2000 to 2003 (bear market for nearly 3 years). Fortunes have been made and fortunes have been lost in the stock market, and that will most likely continue to be the case.
What have we learned? There is a developing trend among investors, money managers and advisors to question the strategy of "buy and hold" in exchange for a more pro-active style of money management. Only time will tell which management style outperforms. Hopefully, we have also learned to watch for "bubbles" and "irrational exuberance" and make logical rather than emotional decisions. Many
