London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares leapt 1.96 percent to 5,230.26 points as traders returned to action after a bank holiday on Monday.
Elsewhere, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index gained 0.77 percent to 5,713.53 points and in Paris the CAC 40 won 1.03 percent to 3,186.77 points.
Asian markets august 30 2011, were mostly trading in the green, tracking gains of European and US markets and after encouraging economic data from the US boosted investor sentiments.
The benchmark Japanese Nikkei was up 1.16 percent at 8,953.9 points, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was trading 1.14 percent higher at 20,091.22 points.
Chinese stocks were, however, trading subdued on fears of a rate hike. The Chinese Shanghai Composite index was ruling flat at 2,574.16 points, down 0.09 percent.
