The Taiex Index fell 20.80 points, or 0.3 percent, to 7,798.59.
Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (2311 TT),
a chip packing and testing company, rose 0.7 percent to NT$27.45, its highest close since Aug. 2. The company plans to buy back up to 34 million common shares, or 0.56 percent of total outstanding shares, it said in a statement. The company plans to buy back shares at between NT$20 and NT$45 each from Aug. 16 to Oct. 15, 2011, it said.
Alpha Networks Inc. (3380 TT),
a networking equipment maker, climbed 6.8 percent to NT$22.85, the highest close since Aug. 4. The company plans to buy back 15 million common shares, or 3.15 percent of total outstanding stock.
