At 9.35am, the underlying FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was 0.8 of a point lower at 1,560.97 after opening 0.18 of point firmer at 1,561.95.

HwangDBS Vickers Research said the immediate support level for the benchmark index was currently seen at the 1,550 points level.

"Wall Street dropped further last night. Major US equity indices slipped between 0.1 per cent and 0.7 per cent at the closing bell on the back of news that there was still no breakthrough in the federal debt limit standoff," it said.

Bursa Malaysia's Finance Index was down 39.84 points at 14,737.46 but the Plantation Index rose 16.11 points to 7,736.42 and the Industrial Index declined 12.08 points to 2,859.77.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Emas Index dropped 1.3 points to 10,738.51, the Malaysia Mid 70 Index gained 26.57 points to 11,818.02 and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Ace Index fell 32.55 points to 4,112.94.

Losers outpaced gainers 152 to 140 while 186 other counters were unchanged.

A total of 154.975 million shares worth RM167.068 million were traded.

IT software company, Prestariang Bhd made its debut at 89.5 sen, for a half-a-sen discount over its initial public offering price of 90 sen per share.

At 9.35am, the stock was down three sen at 87 sen.

Among active stocks, Zelan rose 3.5 sen to 39.5 sen and Ingenuity Solutions fell half-a-sen to 6.5 sen.

For heavyweights, Maybank lost one sen to RM8.84, CIMB dropped three sen to RM8.37 and Petronas Chemical declined four sen to RM6.97.
