At 9.50am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was down 9.48 points to 1,461.47 after opening 0.92 of a point higher at 1,471.87.
Dealers said the US equities market held firm after a statement from the US central bank offered a moderately brighter economic outlook.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 166.43 points to 11,824.39, the S&P 500 rose 18.02 points to 1,236.30 and the Nasdaq Composite added 26.04 points to 2,633.00.
Back home, losers led gainers 224 to 143 while 193 counters were unchanged, 910 untraded and 23 others suspended.
Trading was relatively thin with volume amounting to 507.42 million shares worth RM195 million.
The Finance Index fell 75.22 points to 13,199.16, the Plantation Index declined 43.66 points to 7,475.35 and the Industrial Index lost 20 points to 2,671.01.
The FBM Emas Index dwindled 58.95 points to 9,981.28 and the FBM Mid 70 Index tumbled 57.53 points to 10,786.3 but the FBM Ace Index gained 55.27 points to 4,085.17.
Among active stocks, Karambunai fell 2.5 sen to 18 sen, Compugates rose half sen to seven sen and Iris gained 1.5 sen to 17 sen.
For heavyweights, Maybank lost four sen to RM8.24, CIMB fell nine sen to RM7.22 and Sime Darby dropped four sen to RM8.74. Meanwhile, the price of gold today closed at RM169.53 per gramme, up RM1.26 from yesterday. – Bernama
